Windows installation instructions

To install the Model Railroader Special issue and archive collection on a PC with a Windows operating system, you have the choice of a basic (standard) or a full installation. In basic installation, you will install the index and search function of the collection onto your hard drive and will insert the archive disc as prompted to read stories. In full installation, which we recommend, you will copy the entire contents of the collection onto your hard drive.

Basic or standard Windows installation
1. Log in with an account that has administrator access to your computer. Insert the Model Railroader Special issue and archive collection disc into the DVD-ROM drive of your computer. Run Setup.exe if the Auto Play prompt pops up.  (If nothing launches upon insertion of the disc, you may need to browse the DVD and run setup.exe manually. On Windows XP, the Installation Wizard may launch automatically.) If prompted, allow changes to your computer by clicking “yes”. The Installation Wizard will open. Follow the installer instructions. NOTE: Installation time will vary due to the number of files being copied and the performance of your computer. While the progress bar may indicate only a few minutes or less for installation, typical basic installation may take longer.
2. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
3. If you only wish to use the basic installation method, your installation is complete. Double-click the Model Railroader Special Issue and Archive Collection shortcut and begin enjoying the digital collection.
4. As you call up issues in the collection, you will be prompted to insert the disc as needed to read stories. Insert the disc, allow at least 10 to 15 seconds for the newly inserted disc to “spin up,” then click OK.

Full Windows installation (Preferred method, all stories are downloaded on computer hard drive.)
Instead of inserting a disc to view magazine pages, you can install all of the issues onto the hard drive of your computer. Full installation can be done any time after basic installation.
1. Follow the instructions for basic installation through completion of Step 2.
2. Launch the Model Railroader Special Issue and Archive Collection program by clicking on its shortcut. Insert the disc into your computer if it is not already inserted. Do not re-run the installer and disregard any Auto-Play prompts. On the upper right of the collection home page, click on Options. Click on the button “Save magazine collection to computer” and select OK. Content will begin to copy from the disc to your hard drive.

When the disc is fully copied, the entire Model Railroader Special issue and archive collection will be on your hard drive and you will no longer need to use the disc to read stories.

The movie DVD is identified with a printed film reel. It can be played on a television DVD player or on a computer with movie-playing software. For television viewing, insert the disc into a DVD player and using the DVD player’s remote controller make your selection and start the movie. To play the DVD in a computer that has movie-playing software, insert the disc into the computer, launch the movie-playing application if it does not self-launch, and use the computer keyboard or mouse to make your selection and start the movie.
