Windows Installation Instructions

To install the Astronomy magazine collection on a PC with a Windows operating system, you have the choice of a basic (standard) or a full installation. In basic installation, you will install the index and search function of the collection onto your hard drive and will insert one of the two discs as prompted to read stories. In full installation, which we recommend, you will download the entire contents of the collection onto your hard drive.

Basic (standard) installation
1. Insert Astronomy Disc 1 into the DVD-ROM of your computer. Run Setup.exe if the Auto Play prompt pops up. (If nothing launches upon insertion of Disc 1, you may need to browse the DVD and run Setup.exe manually.) If prompted, allow changes to your computer by clicking “Yes.” The Installation Wizard will open. Follow the installer instructions. NOTE: Installation time will vary due to the large number of files being copied and the performance of your computer. While the progress bar may indicate only a few minutes or, later, less than one minute for installation, the typical basic installation for Disc 1 may take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
2. When the installation is complete, click “Finish.”
3. If you only wish to use the basic installation method, your installation is complete. Double-click the Astronomy shortcut and begin enjoying the digital collection.
4. As you call up issues in the collection, you will be prompted to insert Disc 1 or Disc 2 as needed to read stories. Insert the appropriate disc, allow at least 10 to 15 seconds for the newly inserted disc to “spin up,” and then click “OK.”

Full installation
Instead of inserting discs to view magazine pages, you can install all of the issues onto the hard drive of your computer. Full installation can be done any time after basic installation. NOTE: For full installation, copying the remaining content may take in excess of 2 hours beyond the basic installation.
1. Follow the instructions for basic installation through completion of Step 2 above.
2. Launch the Astronomy magazine collection program by clicking on its shortcut. Insert Disc 1 into your computer if it is not already inserted. Do not re-run the installer and disregard any Auto-Play prompts. On the lower right of the collection home page, click on “Options.” Select the radio button to “Copy all issues to hard drive” and click “OK.” Content will begin to copy from Disc 1 to your hard drive.
3. When prompted to install Disc 2, remove Disc 1 and insert Disc 2. Allow at least 10 to 15 seconds for the newly inserted Disc 2 to “spin up” and then click “OK.” This will copy all of the story content from Disc 2.

When Disc 2 is fully copied, the entire Astronomy magazine collection will be on your hard drive and you will no longer need to use the discs to read stories.
