Windows installation instructions
To install Garden Railways: The Complete Collection on a PC with a Windows operating system, you have the choice of basic (standard) or a full installation. In basic installation, you will install the index and search function of the collection onto your hard drive and will insert one of the two discs as prompted to read stories. In the full installation, which we recommend, you will copy the entire contents of the collection to your hard drive.

Basic or standard installation

1. Log in with an account that has administrator access to your computer. Insert the Garden
Railways: The Complete Collection Disc 1 into the DVD-ROM of your computer. Run Setup.exe if the Auto Play prompt pops up. (If nothing launches upon insertion of the disc, you may need to browse the DVD and run Setup.exe manually. On Windows XP, the installation wizard may launch automatically.) If prompted, allow changes to your computer by clicking “yes.”
The Installation Wizard will open. Follow the installer on-screen instructions.
NOTE: Installation time will vary due to the large number of files being copied and the performance of your computer. While the main progress bar may indicate only a few minutes or less for installation, typical basic installation will take longer.
2. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
3. If you only wish to use the basic installation method, your installation is complete.
Double-click the Garden Railways: The Complete Collection shortcut and begin enjoying the digital collection.
4. As you call up issues in the collection, you will be prompted to insert Disc 1 or 2 as needed to read stories. Hit OK when prompted and insert the appropriate disc, allowing 10 to 15 seconds for the newly inserted disc to “spin up,” then double-click on your selection again.

Full installation (Preferred method; all stories are downloaded on computer hard drive.)
Instead of inserting discs to view magazine pages, you can install all of the issues onto the hard drive of your computer. Full installation can be done any time after basic installation. NOTE: For full installation, copying the remaining content may take an additional hour or more beyond the basic installation.

1. Follow the instructions for basic installation through completion of step 2.
2. Launch the Garden Railways: The Complete Collection application by double-clicking its shortcut. Insert Disc 1 into your computer if it is not already inserted. Do not re-run the installation and disregard any Auto Play prompts.
3. Go into the Options menu. Click the button for “Save magazine collection to computer.” (If you don’t already have Disc 1 in, it will prompt you to do so.)
4. The dialog will tell you the space required for Disc 1 and ask if you would like to continue. Hit OK to proceed copying Disc 1.
5. When Disc 1 finishes, you will be prompted to insert Disc 2. Eject Disc 1. Insert Disc 2 and allow 10 to 15 seconds for the newly inserted disc to “spin up” and hit Next. (Disregard any Auto Play prompts.)
6. The dialog will again tell you the space required for Disc 2 and ask if you would like to continue. Hit OK to proceed copying Disc 2.
7. Once complete, all issues will have been copied and you will no longer require the discs to call up articles. You can now exit the Options menu.

Accessing and printing the full-size drawings from the pages of Garden Railways

• Insert disc 1 into your computer. The drawings are in a separate folder called “Plans.” Inside this folder are three more folders. The first contains all the drawings done by Ted Stinson. The second contains the drawings from Model Railroader magazine that were reprinted in Garden Railways. The third folder contains drawings done by Steve Terry. You can access the plans directly from the disc or download any or all of them to your computer.
• To view any drawing, open the file using Adobe Reader.
• Once open, to print a drawing, click on the printer icon at the top of the window. A box will appear with settings. Note the window at the right side of the box showing dotted lines (tiling) on the sheet to be printed.
• Under “Page size & handling,” make sure the “poster” option is selected. This will tile the pages for printing.
• If you’d like your plans to print full size, make sure “Tile scale” is set to 100%. If you’d like to print your plans to a different scale, enter the percentage of enlargement or reduction in the “Tile scale” box.
• “Overlap” should be set to 0.000 inches.
• Check the “Cut marks” box. This will print the cut marks onto the pages. With an X-acto knife and a straightedge, you can use these cut marks to trim off the excess paper. When the excess paper has been trimmed from all of the sheets, the edges can be perfectly matched up and the sheets taped together into a single drawing.
• Click “Print.” The plan will be printed out on multiple sheets of 8-1/2" x 11" paper that you can then combine into single plan sheets.
