Meet our Books Editorial Staff

Erica Barse, Senior Editor

Erica Barse
Senior Editor, Jewelry Books

I love working at Kalmbach, where I am surrounded by jewelry-making experts and enthusiasts. I am fascinated by the intricacies of a well-designed necklace or pair of earrings, and the pieces created by our talented authors continue to amaze me.

Since starting to edit books for jewelry makers in 2008, I’ve edited books exploring a wide range of techniques. Topics include wirework, beadweaving, stringing and mixed media, chain mail, metalwork, kumihimo, bead embroidery, and more. I enjoy the challenges of creating books with clear instructions and well-presented projects.

When I’m not hard at work editing, I enjoy playing piano, singing, traveling, and rooting for my favorite baseball team. I live in Waukesha with my husband and two cats.

Jeff Wilson, Associate Editor

Jeff Wilson
Associate Editor, Hobby Books

I joined the Kalmbach Books staff in 2005, and my duties mainly involve editing books on model railroading and scale modeling. I first came to Kalmbach Publishing in 1991, serving as an associate editor at Model Railroader magazine until 2001. As a freelance writer I have authored more than 30 books on railroads and model railroads and have contributed photographs and articles to several magazines and books. All of this has been based on my life-long hobbies of model railroading and railfanning.

Away from Kalmbach, I co-own a photography studio, teach photo classes, coach high school baseball, and enjoy watching and playing various sports.

Associate Editor, Hobby Books

I joined Kalmbach Media in 2014 as an associate editor for Model Railroader. I’ve been in the hobby since my teens, and interested in trains since I could stand. Some of my earliest memories are watching trains along what would become Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor.

Before working at Kalmbach, I was a newspaper reporter and editor in the Philadelphia area. The last paper I worked at was right on the Corridor, and the roar of Acela trains would shake the newsroom.

In addition to model trains, I’ve also been modeling other subjects since I was a boy. My first attempt at building a scale model was a 1/25 scale Dodge L700 truck tractor. I’ve since built hundreds of car models, as well as the occasional airplane, ship, tank, and space kit. Working for Kalmbach Books lets me indulge in all of my scale model interests.

I’m now a Waukesha resident, and my wife and son and I are enjoying getting to know the Upper Midwest.

Editorial Director

I’ll never forget one of my very first days at Kalmbach Publishing, when I heard a strange noise and went to investigate. When I found two editors flying a small, remote-controlled quadcopter in a hallway, I knew I was in the right place: working with colleagues who love to pursue the same passions and hobbies as our customers. It’s true that I have more of a personal weakness for our jewelry books, but I love all our book lines – there’s another fascinating thing to learn every day.

I started out as a newspaper journalist in Upstate New York and have been working in various aspects of writing, editing, specialty media, communications, and publishing ever since (with a short stint in nonprofit communications work). When I’m not at work I like to travel — whether to a new part of the city or the world – read, write, and get involved in my community. I’m a New Jersey native who has lived in Milwaukee since 1993.
